Kains’ store is/was on Adelong Rd. opposite the railway station & is now known as Bake’s one stop shop. Mr. Kain sold out to Steve Murphy, who previously owned the Brungle store, in the mid 1970’s. Mr. & Mrs. Kain spent their retirement in a house they had built below my mother’s place in Carey St. After Steve Murphy I think Creek & Bev. Piper had the store for a while, before selling out to Kevin Baker. Hence the name ” Bake’s’ One Stop Shop “

Enjoy all your photos of Good Tumut days besides Kains store at Railway end, My Aunt and Uncle Jack and Monica Hughes owned the Newtown Store in Capper street in the 50’s and 60’s, the store range was extensive
and a great after hours store, groceries newspapers and petrol, 1shilling and 9 pence a gallon around 1956, also a great hang out for all of us young teenagers soft drinks paddle pops etc was a social meeting place, Mon’s brother my father Kevin Halloran was the famous stock and station agent and auctioneer in the 50’s and 60’s, his auction rooms were located in wynyard Street,as he was a founding member of St Vinnies in Tumut his rooms were the original location for storage and sorting of clothes etc, unfortunately I have no snaps in my possession.

    Well done “losttumut”

I knew Steve Murphy from Brungle and I remember his Dad. I only knew him as Mr. Murphyl I knew Pipers from Brungle. The used to keep the tennis court nets at their house across the road. So many memories.

Great family….we knew Pat & Alf well when they were members of Young Anglican Assn from 1940s until 1969 when we moved to Melb to live….Pat & Alf were v good tennis players and v popular at local dances. My husband installed blk and white TVs and antennas for Mr & Mrs Kain’s customers at railway end of Tumut….a great family who gave wonderful service to Tumut for many decades before retiring.
