Turkeys in Richmond St

A big thanks to Ros Erskine for this great picture (taken circa 1955) of the house owned by Fred Hoad just around the corner from Fitzroy St in Richmond St, which contained a yard full of turkeys:

I remember these, I got into huge trouble because I crawled into a nest and sat on some eggs! We lived in Fitzroy Street and Mum was visiting the Hoads. Virginia Graham [O’Keeffe]

Yes…..I remember as a child seeing these beautiful turkeys! Wonder if toddler is Eileen, or her older sister, Nanette? Or am I a generation late??? Clearly remember Eileen and Nanette’s mum conducting boarding house opposite bowling club for many years in 1930s to late 1940s…..

The photo is not any of the children of Daisy and George Hoad who lived next door at “Parkview”. Daisy and George had 5 children. Nanette Butler nee Hoad is the only one left alive today. She is 91 years old.. Children were Allan, Alma (Cookie), Delys, Nanette and Eileen.

Thank you for your information ….Please pass on my best wishes to Nanette, also Eileen, (Delys and Daisy are older) Last time I met Delys (Mrs L) was when I dtove myfriend to Talbingo for reunion in the late 1990s. ….It was delightful to speak with Mr & Mrs L. who were busy as usual on their beautiful farm and which was situated at end of the main road. Nanette too on one of my earlier visits to Tumut in Wynyard St. A lovely family….Their mum , Mrs Hoad, was such a lovely lady to our family. Grace Ching (DOON)

Thank you for your comment. My mum has “lost the plot” not in good health. I am not sure who the small child is but could be of my generation. Its not me but could be my brother or it could be Eillens child, they fit into the right time frame. Yes I remember the Doons. Went to school with Jenny and Robert Doon.

Please mention to Nanette that Bonnie and I (Grace) are thinking of her…..Bon(85) lives in Sydney and Grace(86. 9 mths) in Melbourne. Both of us are in reasonable health with the usual joint problems with gardening keeping me busy for hours, as well as limiting ourselves with only family gatherings these days …..Many thanks for your info….

Zel is fine…She celebrated her 89th birthday recently. Keeps busy with two gardens and certainly engages in more activities than Bon and me Grace.
